For over 25 years, Cozy traveled extensively building international cable television networks, filling her suitcases with indigenous textiles and buying her first loom ten years before actually learning to weave. "A friend's mother was selling her weaving equipment and I bought the whole enchilada just to get my hands on the yarns thar filled every inch of her studio," she says. Now, Cozy is a full-time weaver, not quite supporting a much simpler, stay-at-home lifestyle

This is a Bonnie Inouye-influenced 8-shaft doubleweave scarf using solid 10/2 cotton purple warp and fat (900 yards per pound) pink cotton weft. These are mill-end yarns -- some of my favorites.

15" x 80" plus fringe

This weft-faced plain weave shawl's intense hues come from vintage cottolin fibers.

30" x 95" plus 10 inch fringe

Alternating taupe and grey silk noil warps give this twill block shawl a luscious feel while a variegated nubby rayon weft provides richness and depth.

advancing

This 8-shaft advancing twill cotton scarf has a painted warp and an over-twisted wool crepe weft. The weft yarn's overtwisted/differential shrinkage rate plus the weave structure/sett create a nicely-bumpy "collapse" texture after wet-finishing.

Artist's Statement

I love color and ethnic textiles and simple, plain weaves in their infinite variations. I weave mostly shawls and scarves and am learning more complex weave structures because they expand the complexity and subtlety of color mixing. I stick to natural fibers, have started experimenting with warp painting and will probably remain a novice spinner no matter how many miles of fiber I ever spin. My personal goal is to drape the world in handwoven shawls.
