Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Coverlet Collection
Welcome to the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild online gallery of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum coverlet collection. PPWG and the Pioneers Museum collaborated on a project to research, photograph, document, and analyze the history, weave structure, fiber composition, and artisan technique(s), of 42 coverlets plus additional fragments.
The collection of coverlets in the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) was discovered when the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild helped sponsor the exhibit of Paisley shawls at the museum during Convergence in 2004. It was at that time that the coverlet project was initiated. At the end of three years of planning and hard work, the project culminated in a joint exhibit at the Pioneers Museum with several of the historic coverlets shown along side modern interpretations woven by members of PPWG. PPWG has created an online gallery that houses the photographs and documentation for each coverlet.
The success of this project was dependent upon the hundreds of hours volunteered by guild members and museum staff working side by side. View a list of the volunteers by clicking here.
PPWG invites you to read more about the coverlet project in an excellent article written for the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild Journal.
Online Coverlet Gallery
Simply click on the links beneath any thumbnail photograph to access its photo gallery, its documentation, or the modern interpreation woven by a PPWG member. When you click the photos link, your browser may give you a notice that an active X script is trying to run. Simply click on the notice bar and allow the blocked content. Another notice will ask you if you're sure -- it's fine to say yes (on the PPWG website). This allows access to the inventory number of each coverlet. In the event a researcher would like to write to the museum for more information, that number will be required. This also ensures that the viewer is able to access the complete thumbnail gallery for that coverlet.
While every effort was made to accurately depict the colors and condition of each coverlet, allowance must be made for variation in computer monitors.
Note: Each link will open in a new window. When you are done viewing, close that window to return to this page. Several coverlets have more than one modern intrerpretation, noted by a, b. c, etc. An x indicates that an interpretation has not yet been done for that coverlet.
